Excel has a lot of simple features to make your everyday Excel work much more productive, some of which you may know, but there are also many that will have escaped your attention. Some have more depth than you might suspect. Even if you are an advanced user, you are bound to discover one or two new features, which will repay your investment rapidly.

Everyday Excel you should know – part 1

Operate at maximum efficiency

  • Use keys for common tasks.
  • Navigate rapidly.
  • Freeze panes instantly.
  • Display two sheets of the same workbook.
  • Synchronise the display of two sheets.

Enter, edit and manipulate data skilfully

  • Create dropdown lists for error-free data entry.
  • Group sheets for multiple changes.
  • Select only cells of a specified type (eg constants, formulas).
  • Make the most of Find and Replace.
  • Know the copy and paste capabilities.
  • Use modes to edit formulas and cells with ease.

  • Create and use Favourite folders and Recent workbooks.

At a minimum, you should be able to create basic arithmetic formulas and use the SUM function.
Applies to all Excel versions including 2013, 2010 and 2007. Any differences are pointed out.
