Better still than importing data from downloaded text or Excel files, extract directly from source. Most programs provide the necessary ODBC drivers to enable direct extraction. Set criteria to return the records wanted. Discover the various tools Excel provides, including Microsoft Query. Go beyond what MS Query can do with SQL commands. Learn basic SQL.

  • Import and automate the reimport of entire tables.
  • Use the Query Wizard to select tables, fields and records to import.
  • Get Microsoft Query to join fields from lookup tables.
  • Connect with your inner and outer joins.
  • Use VLOOKUP to join fields from lookup tables imported into Excel.
  • Discover the various Microsoft Query criteria you can use.
  • Refresh all queries.
Getting external data directly – Part 2

  • Modify SQL to include multiple outer joins for returning lookup fields.
  • Edit and correct SQL.
  • Learn basic SQL.
  • Create connection/query files for quick reuse.
  • Edit connection paths and use add-in for quick reset.
  • Append multiple similar tables into one large one.
  • Return totals by branch.
  • Get queries to use cell values as criteria.
  • Use external queries to feed PivotTables directly.
